Top 5 Questions, Answered

What counts as a gas purchase for rewards?+

Most cards use MCC 5541 (service stations) and 5542 (automated fuel dispensers). This covers Shell, Chevron, BP, Exxon, Mobil, Marathon, and nearly every branded gas station. Warehouse club gas (Costco, Sam's Club) codes differently — Costco gas is specifically 5541 but historically only Costco's own card bonuses it at 4%. Electric vehicle charging (EVgo, Tesla Supercharger) often codes as 'utilities' or 'other' rather than gas — check your statement.

What's the best gas credit card in 2026?+

For most drivers, PenFed Platinum Rewards at 5% on gas ($0 fee) is the top no-fee option — but requires PenFed Credit Union membership (easy $5 deposit to Navy Federal-adjacent charity). Costco Anywhere Visa at 4% on gas ($0 fee with Costco membership) is the runner-up. For non-Costco shoppers without PenFed access, Blue Cash Preferred at 3% ($95 fee) wins if gas spend is $250+/month. US Bank Cash+ 5% on gas (chosen quarterly, $2,000 cap) is another strong no-fee option.

Does Costco gas only earn 4% if I have the Costco card?+

Largely yes. Costco gas stations accept Visa only and bonus at 4% with Costco Anywhere Visa, but for other cards, Costco gas purchases often don't trigger the 'gas station' MCC bonus because Costco's merchant coding is inconsistent. Verify with a single purchase — some cards code Costco gas correctly as gas, others as 'warehouse club.' For heavy Costco gas users, the Costco Anywhere Visa is the clear winner.

What about Costco or Sam's fuel vs. retail stations?+

Costco and Sam's gas is typically 10–30¢/gallon cheaper than retail. At 15,000 miles/year and 25 mpg (600 gallons), saving 20¢/gallon = $120/year — often matching or exceeding the rewards difference between cards. Combining a cheaper warehouse club price with a 4% card is usually better total value than a 5% retail-station card paying sticker price.

Do EV charging purchases earn gas rewards?+

Usually no. EVgo, Electrify America, ChargePoint, and Tesla Supercharger charges typically code as 'other' or 'utilities', not gas. Some premium cards are updating this: Capital One Venture X and Chase Sapphire cards are testing EV charging as travel. Check your specific card. For Tesla drivers, the Tesla Mastercard (launched 2024) offers 4% at Superchargers — the first EV-specific gas equivalent card. The top gas cards, ranked for 2026

PenFed Platinum Rewards (5%, $0 fee). The highest flat-rate gas card with no fee and no cap. Requires PenFed Credit Union membership (free, takes 5 minutes). Best for most US drivers.

Costco Anywhere Visa (4% at Costco gas, $0 fee). Excellent for Costco members. Plus 4% on travel, 3% on dining/streaming, 2% at Costco, 1% elsewhere. Costco membership ($65/year for Gold Star) needed.

Amex Blue Cash Preferred (3%, $95 fee). Good for high-grocery families since it bundles 6% grocery + 3% gas. Fee justified when combined with grocery bonus.

Citi Custom Cash (5% top cat, $0 fee). 5% on your highest spend category each month, capped at $500/month. If gas is consistently your top category (usually means <$500 monthly gas), unbeatable.

US Bank Cash+ (5% chosen, $0 fee). Pick gas as one of your 5% categories quarterly, capped at $2,000/quarter. Pairs well with a flat 2% catch-all.

How to pick for YOUR spend

Under $150/month: Use a flat 2% card. Gas-specific cards don't return enough to justify complexity.

$150–$300/month (typical commuter): PenFed Platinum (5%, no fee) nets $140–$220/year on gas alone. Clear winner if you can join PenFed.

$300+/month (heavy commuter, rideshare driver): Combine PenFed + US Bank Cash+ (stack PenFed for first $500/mo after US Bank caps). Alternatively, Blue Cash Preferred's 3% uncapped handles large volumes predictably.

Electric vehicle driver: Most gas cards don't bonus EV charging. Look at Tesla Mastercard or treat EV charging as 'other' on a flat 2% card.

Gas + grocery + dining combo cards

Blue Cash Preferred uniquely bundles 6% groceries + 3% gas + 3% streaming. For a typical family with $500 groceries + $220 gas + $50 streaming monthly, BCP nets $360 + $79 + $18 = $457/year gross − $95 fee = $362 net.

Compare to a flat 2% card on same spend: ($500 + $220 + $50) × 12 × 2% = $185/year. BCP nets ~$175 more. Clear win for family spenders — see our grocery rewards calculator for the full family stack.

EV charging: a growing blind spot

As EV adoption grows, the gap in 'gas' reward coverage is widening. EVgo, Electrify America, ChargePoint, and most public charging networks code as 'other' (MCC 4900 utility or 5399 misc retail), not gas. Tesla Superchargers code as 'Tesla Motors' (5499).

The Tesla Mastercard (launched by Grasshopper/Tesla in 2024) is the first EV-specific card with 4% at Superchargers. For non-Tesla EVs, the Capital One Venture X and US Bank Altitude Connect recently started treating some EV charging as travel — check your specific card. Most EV drivers currently use a flat 2% card for all charging and wait for the category to mature.

Warehouse club gas strategies

Costco gas is typically 15–30¢/gallon below retail pump prices. For a commuter using 50 gallons/month, that's $10–$15/month savings = $120–$180/year just on price — often more than the incremental rewards between cards.

Combine warehouse club gas pricing with Costco Anywhere Visa 4% for optimal value. Sam's Club gas is similarly discounted; the Sam's Club Mastercard earns 5% on gas and dining. For households with existing warehouse memberships, these co-brand cards are the gas reward champions.

Watch the caps

Most 5% gas cards have caps that kick in faster than drivers realize. US Bank Cash+ 5% gas caps at $2,000/quarter — fine for $500/month drivers, but trips $600/month drivers into 1% territory. Citi Custom Cash caps at $500/month total spend for the 5% category. Discover It rotating 5% (when gas is featured) caps at $1,500/quarter.

PenFed Platinum Rewards is the exception: 5% gas with NO cap. For truly high-mileage drivers (Uber/Lyft, sales reps, long commutes), PenFed's uncapped 5% is mathematically unbeatable.

Watch for price vs. rewards

A 5% rewards card paying full sticker at a branded station can lose to a 2% card at a discount station. Example: $4.00/gal at BP (5% rewards = 20¢/gal back = $3.80 effective) vs. $3.70/gal at Costco (4% rewards = 14.8¢/gal back = $3.552 effective). Costco wins by 25¢/gal.

Always compare pump price first, card rewards second. The cheapest fuel typically beats the highest rewards on identical fuel. GasBuddy or Costco membership access is a bigger lever than card choice.
